In 2015, Patrick became the first person to undergo a face transplant, a groundbreaking procedure that transformed his life after a devastating accident in 2001 left his face severely disfigured.

The Courageous Firefighter

Patrick’s journey began as a selfless volunteer firefighter. He fearlessly embraced his duty to protect and serve whenever his community needed assistance. Tragedy struck when a collapsing house trapped him, resulting in severe burns to his face and torso. The injuries were so extensive that his face and scalp suffered 3rd-degree burns, with his lips, nose, and eyelids almost entirely destroyed.

“[My mask] was melting to my face… My hose [was] already melted,” Patrick recounted.

Overcoming unimaginable pain and undergoing more than 70 surgeries, Patrick’s resilience was remarkable. His determination to regain a sense of normalcy kept him going, despite the physical and emotional challenges he faced.

Amidst his struggles, Patrick drew inspiration from a revolutionary procedure. Isabelle Dinoire, a French woman, had successfully undergone a face transplant after a disfiguring incident. This groundbreaking achievement ignited hope within Patrick that he could regain his appearance and lead a “normal” life once again.

Patrick’s path crossed with Dr. Eduardo D. Rodriguez from NYU Langone Medical Center, who promised to help him if a suitable donor could be found. The nonprofit organization LiveOnNY eventually identified a match in the form of David Rodebaugh, a young man who had tragically sustained a severe head injury.
